Week 13 Food Storage Challenge

5 Pounds Peanut Butter / Condiments

Peanut butter, Wal-Mart has 40 oz. for 4.37.  If you or someone in your family is allergic to peanuts get cashew, almond, or another nut butter, just make sure they can eat it. I am allergic to peanuts but I can eat the cashew butter but not the almond ,so make sure that they can eat what you get for them.

Condiments, Get what you use, and keep in mind that you can make a lot of them yourself. 57 Steak sauce, mustard, Ranch dressing mix, BBQ Sauce to name a few.

How are the packs coming along?

Were you able to find a CPR, 1st aid class?

Continue putting water back.

Add a little more to your money stash.

Have a great week.

My poor chickens

It has been so windy and cold the past few days, Spring time in southern Colorado (fun fun fun). We did get a little skiff of snow the other night but it was gone by morning, maybe it will help hold down the dust some.

Went out to feed the chickens the other day and something, still not sure what had gotten into the pen and killed 9 of them and the turkey.  The dogs had been doing a lot of barking that night, I even got up once to see if I could see what they were barking at but didn't see anything, guess I should of looked a little harder.

A couple months ago something got in and got 7 of them, we found and fixed a hole in the fence. A friend knew some one getting rid of some, so we were able to get a few more. So now with having lost such a large amount two different times not sure what we are going to do, get more,  wait, put them in a different place, or rebuild a new pen.I am a little upset about this, in over 15 years of having chickens in that spot this hasn't ever happened before.  I do still have the rooster and 4 chickens left. Have thought about incubating our own eggs, Travis has an incubator we could use or maybe I could talk him into doing it :).

Have a great Day.

Woo Hoo My Computer is back.

Don't know why we have had such bad luck with computers the past few years.

My computer started making funny noises a couple months ago, I just tried to ignore it but when it started freezing up every time we tried to do something I knew we had probably better get it looked at before we tried to downloaded the tax program.
So glad I did, the hard drive was going out and it had a couple viruses. Would of hated to lose everything again. It took them a couple weeks to get it done, but hopefully all will be good now and it won't freeze up every time I try to do something, have to say that was getting a little old, and a pain to deal with.

Once again we will be to the last minute doing taxes this year. Just like last year. At least we don't have to reenter everything this time like we did last year.

I have so much to catch up on here, so hopefully I can get all caught up in the next few days. So many things have happened this past month.

Week 12 Food Storage Challenge

1000 Multi Vitamins / Dry soups and crackers.

1000 Multi Vitamins, Wal-Mart has a 200 count for 7.74 I buy mine at Puritans Pride they almost always have a sale going on.
These will be important since during high stress situations you more then likely will not be eating correctly and you will need your vitamins more then ever.

Dry Soups and crackers, dry soups are handy since they are easy to store and you just need to add water and warm.

Crackers need to be repacked into jars and vacuum sealed if they are stored for very long in the original package they will taste like plastic and are just plain nasty. You can also make your own they are pretty easy to make.

Are you working on your packs?

How are the CPR and 1st aid coming along?

Add some more to your water storage.

Put a little more into your money stash.

Have a great week.

Week 11 Food Storage Challenge

10 pounds Powder Milk / Spices and Herbs

10 pounds of powder milk Wal-Mart has powdered milk for 15.98 for 64 ounces or 7.98 for 25.60 ounces. To extend the shelf life to up to 20 years you will need to repackage the milk into airtight containers and keep stored in a dry cool place. I have read that if you add a little vanilla and a little sugar it makes it taste a little better if trying to drink it ( I don't drink milk, so not sure if this really works).

Spices and Herbs / When planning your garden try to grow some of your own. If you buy in bulk you will want to repackage into airtight containers and store in a cool dry place.

Are you learning any 1st aid and CPR yet?

How are your packs coming along?

Keep adding to your money stash and put some water back.

Have a great week.

Week 10 Food Storage Challenge

50 pounds flour or wheat / 25 pounds oats
Flour or wheat, If you don't have a grinder there is no point in getting wheat so get flour. Flour at Wal-Mart is 8.44 for 25 pounds. Which ever you get, flour or wheat, if any way possible freeze it for at least 48 hours this will kill all the little pest in the flour.  I store mine outside in a shed and it stays froze all winter, I have some from 08 that is still good. If you live in  a warmer climate you will need to use oxygen absorbers, and will need to it put in Mylar bags.( Unless you get flour or wheat that is already in long term storage containers).

Oats, Wal-Mart has oats for 13.58 for 10 pounds or 1.68 for the 2 pounds 10 oz. containers, I get mine at IFA ( our local feed store) they have them for 30.00 for 50 pounds. When storing oats use the same methods as you would for flour or wheat.

The action item for this month is to learn C.P.R. and some 1st aid. A lot of fire departments and red cross centers will offer CPR and basic 1st aid classes for a small fee and sometimes for free.

The extra item this month is packs, we use our hunting packs for this and we take them where ever we go. Each one of use has our own. These would be the same thing as bug out bags. I hope to get a post up in the next couple weeks about these.

Add some more money to your money stash, even if it is a very small amount it all adds up in the end.

Put back some more water.
