WARSHING CLOTHES

My brother sent this to me, I will never whine about laundry again.

WARSHING CLOTHES

"Warshing Clothes Recipe" -- imagine having a recipe for this!
Years ago, an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe exactly as written and found in an old scrapbook with spelling errors and all.

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.
Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles -- 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags.

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

Hang old rags on fence.

Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed.
Scrub porch with hot soapy water.

Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.

Brew cup of tea, sit, rock a spell, and count yore blessings.

  2. I follow your blog and dearly love it. This is a good reminder, we really do have it made and need to count our blessings! My husband and I live in a community living situation in alumni housing on a college campus all we have to do is pile our laundry in a cart and roll it down to the laundramat (a few hundred feet) and some people complein about that! We've got it made, hahaha. Bless you...EvieJo

  4. We lived in Costa Rica, in a remote location for awhile. Doing the laundry there was an all day (or several day...) activity. On my blog there is a story about laundry day that kind of gives you a clue how good we have it in the USA. If you are interested, go to www.aviewfromthecottage.blogspot.com and click the tab that says "Our Costa Rican Adventure, then scroll down to Sept. 2009.
After a year of living on a remote farm with very little modern convenience, I learned that I could wear my clothes far more often than I did stateside. If what I was wearing didn't stand alone or walk on its own,and it didn't knock me down when doing the sniff test, then it should be worn again before being put in the wash. I have managed to carry that practice over to US living to a certain degree, I try to wear my clothes a few times before I wash them, but not to the extremes I did in Costa Rica. It is amazing how much less laundry I do now, compared to a few years ago!
Thanks for posting. I always enjoy hearing what you are up to! Elle
