Week 2 Food Storage Challenge

This week you will want to get,
50 Lbs flour or wheat and 1 lb yeast ( More if you can afford it).

I don't remember the exact price of flour at Wal-Mart, but I know it was right around 9.00 for 25 pounds. So a little under 20 dollars for 50 pounds.
1 pound of yeast is 5.69 at bulk foods where I buy mine. Not sure how much at Wal-Mart.

50 pounds of flour or wheat, if you have a grinder you can get wheat, if not get flour. White flour will last longer then wheat flour in storage. If you live in a place that freezes during the winter get your flour now and you can store it out in a shed or somewhere where it will freeze. Just pour in a bucket, add a couple pieces of spearmint gum, and put the lid on.  If it freezes real good for at least a few days, it will last a very long time ( I opened some flour a few months ago from 08 and it was still good). If you don't live where it freezes you will need to put it in some Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.  If using Mylar bags you still need to put them in buckets, this will keep varmints from trying to chew through.

1 Pound yeast, yeast will keep for a very long time in the freezer. I keep mine in the freezer and have a smaller container that holds about a cup that I  fill and keep in my fridge to use.

How are you coming along on getting in shape if you are not already there?

Don't forget to keep putting water back.

Add a little more to you money stash, even if only a couple dollars, ever little bit helps, and it all adds up.

Have a great week.

    1. Sue,
The fridge might work but I am not sure that it would get cold enough to kill the bugs in the flour, when you freeze for a few days it kills all the bugs. I would think it would keep it longer then just in the open though.
      Have a great day.

  2. Thank you. My question is about the stash. I'm under the impression that if this all occurs that the dollar is not going to be worth anything. Does one think that maybe we should be getting silver and gold for trading? I don't know, I'm just asking.

    1. Joani,
You are right when it all happens after a bit the dollar will be worthless but as chipmunk said below in the very beginning you may not be able to get your money out of the bank but stores will still be taking cash, so you will be able to use that time to top off your supplies.
If you can afford gold or sliver I would defiantly get some but only after all the other essentials. Hope this helps.
      Have a great day

  3. You are so right to encourage people to get in shape. I've been working on it since last year. The fewer health issues you have, the better off you will be.

Joani, it's a good idea to have some money set aside that's not in the bank. At the beginning of a financial collapse, banks may either declare a "holiday", where they will limit how much of your money you can access (if any) or they might do a "bail-in", where they confiscate some of your money. Check out what happened in Greece not long ago.

    1. Chipmunk,
You are so right getting in shape now will be a big plus when things get bad, not only will you have more work to do you will also be dealing with a lot of stress. And a very good idea to have cash on hand as you said look at Greece, Pretty sure our government will do the same thing.
      Have a great day

  6. Connie,

I had no idea about using the pieces of gum for storing flour out in the cold. We live out in Oklahoma and store our flour in the Mylar bags in 5 gallon buckets with oxygen absorbers. Thanks for the information.

    1. Sandy,
My Dad has used gum to store flour ever since I can remember he say's the spearmint keeps all the little bugs away that they don't like the smell.
