Week 19 Food Storage Challenge

This Weeks food storage challenge is.

50 lbs Sugar / Canned fruit

50 lbs sugar if you are going to be doing any canning you may want to try and get a little more sugar than this.

Canned fruit, get the fruit that your family likes even if you plan on canning your own you might want to pick up  a few just to have. Then if the fruit freezes or something happens to it you will still  have a little. Pie fillings also count as fruit.

Keep putting water back.

Add a little more to your money stash.

Don't forget garage sales this time of year a great place to find things you may need.

When planting your gardens and flower beds, don't forget to add some herb plants to them. You might also think about putting them all on a drip system if you don't  already use one. It cost a little in the beginning but you will save a lot on your water bill, plus you can put it on a timer and not have to worry about remembering to water.

Have you worked on learning any new skills? I would love to hear what they are.

  1. Adding to my knowledge of herbal medicine... This week I have been making plantain poultices (the medicinal herb not the fruit), for a bad case of poison ivy my husband got while digging up some trees. The plantain works great on poison ivy!I have been learning the medicinal uses of many of the local herbs and weeds. I was surprised how many weeds I used to think were a nuisance that are actually invaluable medicinal herbs! Now I just need to figure out to convince my husband that they are invaluable!

    1. Elle,
I have been trying to learn more herbal medicine, I want to be able to use what is native to this area and not have to depend on herbs that are not from here.My yard is full of dandelions and plantain and I try to keep them there lol when most people are trying to get rid of them.
      Have a great day,
      Connie

  3. Hi Connie,
You are such an inspiration. I've been a little off track on my food stores. Thanks for getting me going again. My sister and I have signed up for 3 canning classes at the county extension office: jams and jellies, water bath, and pressure canning. I've done jams, jellies, pickles, and salsa in the distant past, but nothing else. I'm really excited about it. Also, there is a good-sized master gardener program here with classes in January. I always thought you had to be kind of an expert for that, but it's just everyday people. Hope to learn tons. Later, brenda from ar
